The Negotiator: Carl Schuessler Jr. (Part II)

Editor’s Note: This is part two of a two-part discussion with Mr. Schuessler. We found this discussion so relevant to today’s healthcare challenges, we decided not to leave anything behind. You may find part one here.

As Co-Founder and Managing Principal of Mitigate Partners, a risk management, cost containment and employee benefits consulting firm, Carl Schuessler leads a consortium of 30+ employee benefit consulting and brokerage firms. Carl brings more than 30 years of experience in benefits consulting and financial services to the field, and pioneered the fiduciary approach to benefits advisory services. His passion for fixing the problem of runaway health-care costs in this country, and his desire to treat the employer’s money as his own led him through years of research culminating in the development of his proprietary FairCo$t Health Plan. This innovative plan design seamlessly integrates 20+ cost containment solutions with a high-performance health-care solutions platform. This combination provides first-class benefits at substantially lower costs to employers all while realizing better clinical outcomes for plan members. A founding Health Rosetta Charter Certified Advisor, Carl has been nationally recognized for his work in creating localized, employer-built, health-care plans. By removing misaligned incentives, directing care based on quality and cost, and, ultimately, helping courageous employers fix their plans, companies are saving 15-to-30 percent in their healthcare spend. An accomplished speaker, Carl often rallies audiences with stories of how Mitigate Partners are challenging Wall Street (insurer-built) health plans by creating Main Street (employer-built) health plans and bending the healthcare cost curve.

By serving as a Fiduciary and Steward of our client’s health plan dollars, and focusing on how to reduce the cost of healthcare (rather than the cost of insurance), we operate more as Population Health Managers rather than as “Brokers”, allowing our team to specialize in Cost Containment and Risk Mitigation strategies that result in dramatic reductions in the overall health plan spending of our clients.  Our more than 150 years of combined experience in benefit planning, allows us to offer our clients improved cash flow, “employer friendly health plans” and lower cost trends over time.

Carl has successfully networked with other trusted partners/vendors such as insurance companies, PBM’s, TPA’s, health care destinations, employee benefit communication companies, and onsite clinics.  To the delight of his clients, he has a proven track record of bringing comprehensive High- Performance Healthcare Solutions to businesses regarding healthcare costs, benefit design, improved medical outcomes, and improved employee communications.  Carl is an employer advocate and provides easily understood solutions and encouragement to employers.

They are on track to save well North of 10 million dollars this year. That’s a big deal. That’s more money in the classrooms, teacher raises, music programs for the kids.

Carl’s Rx for Success:

  1. Stay true to yourself. You can never go wrong with being yourself.
  2. Be humble. Don’t forget where you came from.
  3. Be passionate. Find something you are passionate about.
  4. Be convicted and committed. Have conviction for what you stand for, and be committed.
  5. Establish quality relationships that stand the test of time.
  6. Find good mentors.
  7. Always pay it forward.
  8. Don’t let failure be your judge. Let it be your teacher.

Just because you go out and have beers with a doctor who lives down the street from you doesn’t mean he’s a good doctor. He’s a great person, but doesn’t mean he’s a great doctor.

Plan design has to reward good decisions. That’s how you make this stuff work, and a lot of brokers don’t know how to do that.

Price equals quality in most things in life – not in healthcare.

No one wants their cost to go down except for the employer.
