The Mindful Physician: Michael S. Krasner, MD, FACP

Michael (Mick) Krasner (he/him), MD, FACP is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Krasner has been teaching
Mindfulness-Based programs to patients, medical students, and health professionals for more
than 23 years, involving over 4000 participants and more than 2000 health professionals, and
continues to facilitate Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction for employees and dependents of
the University of Rochester. He was the project director of Mindful Communication: Bringing
Intention, Attention, and Reflection to Clinical Practice, sponsored by the New York Chapter of
the American College of Physicians, funded by the Physicians Foundation for Health Systems
Excellence, with results reported in JAMA in September 2009. This program led to the
establishment of Mindful Practice Programs at the University of Rochester which he co-directs, offering continuing educational programs to health professionals and educators locally
and internationally for the past 13 years, and incudes a multi-year teacher training program for
future facilitators of Mindful Practice. He has been engaged in a variety of research projects
including the investigations of the effects of mindfulness practices on the immune system in
the elderly, on chronic psoriasis, and on caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients.

The Quarterback: Scott Paviol, MD

Dr. Paviol is from Pennsylvania and obtained his undergraduate degree at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience. While at F&M, he was a John Marshall Scholar, graduated Magna Cum Laude, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He was accepted by the Penn State College of Medicine following his sophomore year. Dr. Paviol obtained his medical doctorate from Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. While there, he was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honors society. In addition, he was one of 30 medical students selected for the nationally recognized Clinical Science Training Program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, where he spent a year performing individualized research on Type 1 Diabetes. He also spent a month in Ecuador as part of a program bringing medical care to underserved areas.

The Mediator: Deb Roman, DO

Deb Roman is a Board Certified Family Physician. She offers integrative medicine consultations and hands-on osteopathic medicine to individuals of all ages. She integrates advanced training in nutrition, mindful practice and meditation, biodynamic osteopathy, yoga and integrative medicine into her work. She is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine.

She is the founder of Rediscovering Meaning In Our Work – a consulting and educational program with a focus on the well-being of physicians and medical school students. She teaches workshops, organizes retreat-like conferences, shares presentations, provides consultations to individuals and organizations and facilitates discussion groups. Dr. Roman is a Meaningful Work Peer Consultant, offering consultations to physicians and other healthcare professionals who would like to work individually with a peer to explore ways to ease stress, cultivate well-being and practice medicine in a way that is meaningful.

The Mindful Doc: Dael Waxman, MD

Dael Waxman, M.D. is a Professor of Family Medicine at Atrium Health in Charlotte, NC. Previously Interim Chair and Vice-Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, he continues on the faculty there as well as serves as the Medical Director of Physician Well-being for Medical Education for Atrium Health and Medical Director of Patient-Centered Programming at Atrium CMC-Mercy. In addition to his medical background, he has received training in and has been integrating family therapy, clinical hypnosis, mind/body medicine, mindfulness, and leadership coaching into teaching, practice, and faculty development for over 25 years. He has taught regionally, nationally, and internationally on: physician burnout and well-being, mindfulness in medicine, developing a patient and family-centered culture, family influences on health, physician-patient communication, and collaboration between mental health and primary care.
