The Author: Robert Pearl, MD

Dr. Robert Pearl is the former CEO of The Permanente Medical Group (1999-2017), the nation’s largest medical group, and former president of The Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (2009-2017). In these roles he led 10,000 physicians, 38,000 staff and was responsible for the nationally recognized medical care of 5 million Kaiser Permanente members on the west and east coasts. 

Named one of Modern Healthcare’s 50 most influential physician leaders, Pearl is an advocate for the power of integrated, prepaid, technologically advanced and physician-led healthcare delivery.

He serves as a clinical professor of plastic surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and is on the faculty of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he teaches courses on strategy and leadership, and lectures on information technology and health care policy.

He is the author of “Mistreated: Why We think We’re Getting Good Healthcare—And Why We’re Usually Wrong,” a Washington Post bestseller that offers a roadmap for transforming American healthcare. All proceeds from the book go to Doctors Without Borders.

The Director: Pari Deshmukh MD, FAPA, FASAM

After finishing his residency at a highly renowned psychiatry program (where he served as a Chief Resident), Dr. Deshmukh started his career as a geriatric and addiction psychiatrist in Central Florida. He learned the basics of private practice, served at high posts of various medical corporations. He got triple board certified and certified as a psychotherapist. He is now serving as the Medical Director at Balanced Wellbeing LLC. Using effective leadership, administrative, research, clinical, and teaching skills and spirit of community service, Dr. Deshmukh became a health care leader and expanded work area of Balanced Wellbeing LLC exponentially over a short period of time. Today, the team of Balanced Wellbeing LLC is serving over 400 patients daily at over 160 facilities throughout various counties of central Florida and improving the mental health care of thousands of geriatric and addiction patients. Dr. Deshmukh innovated a novel and effective method of health care delivery to long term facilities (nursing and skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities) that is now shaping a new model of mental health care. His work has been recognized by various reputed local and national organizations, scientific journals, publishers, medical conferences, and pharmaceutical, research and health care companies. Dr. Deshmukh has a special interest in integrative psychiatry and meditation.  Being a meditation trainer, he volunteers for the benefit of local communities.

The Activist: Nicole Johnson, MD

Nicole M. Johnson MD was born and raised in Cleveland, OH where she currently resides with her husband, two daughters, and dog Neko. She received her undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University and her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Johnson is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Physicians and Surgeons in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. She specializes in pediatric procedural sedation and earned her division national recognition as a center of excellence in the field.

Dr. Johnson is the President and Co-founder of PHYSICIANS FOR PATIENTS, a grassroots physician organization that champions physician-led care and fights against the unsupervised practice of medicine by non-physicians. She is passionate about lowering the cost of medical care for all Americans, making sure every American has access to their choice of affordable medical care, increasing the physician workforce, and ending mandatory Maintenance of Certification (MOC®).

Dr. Johnson is a contributing author of REDUCING COSTAND WASTE IN AMERICAN MEDICINE: A Physician-Led Roadmap to Patient-Centered Medical Care. The Communicator: Bradley Block, MD

Bradley Block, MD, is an otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon on Long Island, New York, where he lives with his wife and three young sons. He is a partner at ENT and Allergy Associates and he created the Physician’s Guide to Doctoring Podcast. It is a scintillating and engaging podcast, where he interviews physician and non-physician experts to help teach us what we should have been learning while we were busy memorizing Kreb’s Cycle. It is a practical guide for practicing physicians, physicians-in-training and all allied health professionals. Topics range from personal finance to politics to improving interactions with patients to what every doctor should know about different specialties.

He went to med school at SUNY Buffalo and graduated with research honors and went on to residency at Georgetown. He enjoys surfing (yes, there is surfing on Long Island), skiing (there is no skiing on Long Island), smoking meat, exercising, throwing his sons across the pool and finding any excuse to quote an 80s movie.
